History – Dr MGR University

Dr MGR University is a source of enormous pride and delight for the state of Tamil Nadu and one of India’s most prestigious universities. The Tmt Kannammal Educational Trust, founded in 1985, aimed to promote educational advancement. Consequently, Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College started soon after, followed by Dr MGR Engineering College in 1988 and Thai Moogambigai Dental College in 1991. Recognizing the critical need for a prominent institution dedicated to medical sciences, the Tamil Nadu state government charged Drs. A. Venugopal, M. Natarajan, and S. Kameswaran with organizing a High-Level Committee.

This distinguished Committee investigated contemporary advances in medical research and traditional Indian medicinal systems such as Siddha, Ayurveda, and Unani. The Medical University of Tamil Nadu was deliberately curated with a thorough methodology, imagining a harmonic balance of modern medical education with the ancient knowledge inherent within Indian Systems of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy, among other disciplines.

Moreover, the state legislature of Tamil Nadu enthusiastically supported the establishment of this famous medical University. On September 24, 1987, the President of India legally approved the Tamil Nadu Medical University Act, 1987, also known as Act No. 37 of 1987.
